99 Grand. Is it possible to switch 247 transfer case to 242 or 231?

I found some info, but everything about up to 98, nothing about 99.
I have two 99 4x4 Grands, 4.0 and 4.7 engines, both have 247 tr. cases.
Are 242 different for 4.0 and 4.7 engines?
Thanks.
One of my Jeeps came with front drive shaft removed, which, I was told, is a sign of bad viscous coupling.
Another one I towed on tow dolly with rear wheels down and tr. case in neutral.
Did I kill my transfer case?
Are front and rear drive shafts disconnected from each other if tr. case in neutral?
Thanks.

From what i have found the 247 is the same as the 242 for the 4.oL engines. The 4.7 in my opinion would be different seeing as it's a v8 and not an L6.
If you towed it home with the transfer in neutral it should be ok. Also from looking up the info on google the pulling the front drive shaft is a way to either get around the vicous coupler failing or to improve gas mileage. Hope this helps.

2. The majority of the times it's removed because of t-case issues. The rest of the times people think they save fuel. I doubt they do, but it's a safety issue because even with the transmission in park, by not having a front DS in there the front yoke in the t-case might be held stationary, but the rear wheels/axle can still roll because the front & rear drive shafts aren't locked together.
3. That depends on the distance and speed involved. It's suggested to either remove one of the drive shafts when towing on a tow dolly or tow truck, or to use a trailer.
