97 Grand Cherokee Rear End
My 1997 Grand Cherokee Laredo needs a differential replacement, would a 97 Laredo Tsi model be an interchangeable swap, or would the gear ratio not match up?

Old fart with a wrench
ZJ jeeps come with 2 different rear axles and 2 different gearsets. The 4.0 has a D35 rear diff and the V8 has a D44a. The standard gearing is 3.55 unless it came with the tow package, then it's 3.73. The D44a has an aluminum center section and a larger universal joint connection, but can be used in a 4.0 jeep by either changing the yoke or using a special u-joint. The trick is the gearing MUST match the front axle! Changing the yoke is complicated to do it correctly because bearing preload must be right.
Now, what do you have and what are you trying to put in? What is the Tsi?
