96 ZJ Will only engage in "full time".

96 ZJ Will only engage in "full time".
When I put my jeep in any gear (RD2 or 1) it won't engage. If I put it in 4WD part-time High or 4WD PT Low it will engage and I can drive it. If it's in Full-time 4WD won't go, only PT. I need to get this to a transmission shop. Is it ok to drive it in PT for about 4 miles?
The first symptom was a few days ago it was going uphill and downshifted then when the road leveled out it didn't up-shift. I had to go into neutral and then back into Drive and then it would go into Drive. This was the only symptom until today it finally stopped engaging all together except as described above.
Any guesses as to whether I'm going to need a new transmission? Transfer case?
