96 Overheating
I just bought 96' Cherokee and I'll have to say, I have never owned a 4x4, or a Jeep, so this is new to me. I bought the Jeep knowing of the overheating issues, but got the Jeep for a great deal. Once I bought the Jeep I brought it home and dumped all the old coolant out and flushed the block, and radiator. I then replaced the Thermostate, Temperature Sensor, and Upper Radiator Hose. I filled the system with some type of system flush and filled with water per directions. It said to run the vehicle for 3 to 6 hours then flush. I ran it for about 2, dumped the system and filled with 50/50 antifreeze. Important to note that the mechanical fan does not have a shroud. I ordered one last night off of Partsgeek.com, and hopefully it will be in Tues. Though I can see where the shroud definetly needs to be there especially when idleing, the vehicle still starts to run hot a freeway speeds. If you turn the A/C off, there is a drop in temp, and then turn the heat on, even more of a drop. I live in Louisiana, and the high was around 96 degrees today, and I was running the heat. OMG. If anyone has any advise, please let me know.

Does the radiator look clogged? Did you have muck floating in the old coolant? What temp thermostat are you using? Do you have a fan clutch or thermo fan clutch or direct drive fan. Should be a A/C fan in there. Turn the a/c on and see if the fan comes on. if Not thats part of the problem.

My ZJ runs hot also here in Vegas and its about 107* here and it stays at about 222*.
I'd replace your fan clutch, water pump and perhaps your radiator is old and clogged.

The zj's are none to have overheating problems. I had and oversized radiator put on and did a radiator flush and it still heats up. I was told that the fan on the engine doesn't cool the water/ coolant fast enough and to get and electric fan for them. But I've herd of ppl who have done all this and the jeep still runs warm. But u should be fine as long as it doesn't get above 240ish.

240? I have a 94 zj with 5.2, never gets above 210, weather ac is on or not, sitting in traffic, or on the free way. Even when temps hit 95 degrees here.
