96 Grand Cherokee Transmission Issues
Hello everyone. I picked up at 96 Grand Cherokee (4.0/42re/242) last week as a project/family trail toy. This is my first jeep project so I am green and trying to learn as much as I can. I bought this jeep knowing that the trans was slipping with the intention of fixing it myself.
On to the symptoms:
Reverse - hooks up great no issues.
Drive - Half throttle or more and it chatters and slips. Honestly it feels like it is limping in 2nd or 3rd gear. The reason I think that is because if I gradually increase throttle I can get all the way up to 50mph and never see or feel a shift.
I dropped the pan and replaced the filter and fluid with ATF+4 - NO CHANGE.
Now I have a donor trans/tcase with 50k miles that I can attempt to put in there but I DO not know exactly what it is. Can someone help with that? I do not have a VIN but I have the numbers off of the trans.
Trans - PK521195322780 1120
Tcase - 249
Little long winded but thanks in advance for helping the new guy out!

Old fart with a wrench
Welcome to CF!
You'll have to check out the trans code because I'm not familiar with them, but stick with the 242 t/case. The 249 is full time 4wd. There ain't no 2wd in it! If the trans code comes up 44re, it's from a V8 and won't work with your 4.0

I have similar, not the same issues on a 44RE, there is a 44RE troubleshooting guide somewhere, I swear I saw it, lol. My main clutches are supposed to be my problem, slips and grinds if I stomp it.
