1995 4.0 ZJ, 214,000 miles on it. Speedo sometimes doesn't register, but the trip odometer in the overhead console registers miles. Is there a solid old fashioned speedo cable from the trans to the speedo, or is all electronic. If its just a cable, I can swap that, or else its time to look for a speedo cluster in the junkyards...

 

Speedo is electronic. So looks like I'll replace the cluster.

 

There are 2 Speed sensors on my 94. One on the trans and one on the transfercase. The one on the transfercase controls the transmission shifting since that was my issue. Not sure if the speedo and the overhead read the same sensor.

I finally got a chance to remove and swap clusters. No more troubles. But bloody hell, I want to kick the interior design engineers in the nuts... Stupid.

 

Well, I guess the engineers heard you. I needed to change my gauge lights in my '00 WJ and it was just a clip-held bezel and 4 screws.
