94 grand tranny

will a 42re out of a 96 fit my 94 4.0 42re

my tranny pulls in reverse but very rarely will go into a forward gear, could there be something to fix this? or does it probably need swapped

Engine: 4.7L V8

The manual states that '96 and later 42RE is controlled by the PCM instead of having a separate Transmission Control Module. Does this mean it won't work? I can't say. Sorry.
