Default 94 Grand Cherokee tranny issues

94 grand cherokee laredo, shortly after i bought it the tranny would hesitate slightly at a start.A buddy and i {hes a mechanic}changed the fluid and filter. There was no metal in the pan, This helped a little but it still did it.When i would shift it manually from 1.2.d it did not do it, the overdrive worked fine as well. Now the other day i leave for work and its stuck in 3rd gear, It will not shift on its own, it will shift manually from 2 to drive, putting it manually into 1st has no affect at all and the over drive light on the dash does not come on when you push the button. the jeep has 175,000 miles on it, not sure which tranny it has,but the buddy that i helped change the filter said it was a good transmission. he is a mechanic for the post office and been there 30 years. It has the 4.0 motor. Any ideas would be great thanks.

My daughter just bought a 96 GC. It was shifting funny also.Acting like it missed a shift. I adjusted the TV cable at the throttle body and changed the tps out. It seemed fine when it was warmed up.
