Default 94 GC 6 Cylinder Limited "Front drive shaft" question

Hey all,

I just replaced both half shafts and wheel bearing hubs on my ZJ. I am still getting a grinding type noise as I drive. It feels like it's under my feet when the Jeep is moving. No noise at idle.

The Double Cardan CV Yoke has been replaced along with the U-Joints. My best guess is there are bad bearings that I am hearing. I'm not sure if it's in the front axle or the transfer case.

Any help would be great

You told us you have a Grand Cherokee. That's a ZJ, not a YJ. The YJ is a Wrangler.

The best way to locate the noise is to put it up on 4 jackstands and run it. OR a lift. You can use the old boy trick, putting a screwdriver against the case with your forehead against the handle.

oops, fixed.

Going to try that. Need to find two more stands. I forgot to mention the old Double Cardan CV Yoke had a huge hunk busted out of it. I'm assuming it was cracked when I bought it. I haven't been able to do any off roading with it yet.

Ok, I picked a U joint for the front of the drive shaft. I forgot to replace it when I replaced the others. No luck there.

I removed the shaft and took the Jeep for a spin. No noise with the shaft removed.

My best guess is the Double Cardan CV Yoke has gone bad. It's about 9-10 months old. I do not recall hitting anything that would cause and mechanical issues. I'm going to replace the U joints in that again as well before I fork out the cash for a new CV Yoke. I do not see any physical damage to it.

I'll add that when I get to around 45+ I hear the grinding/wining noise. Especially when I let off the gas.

I had the same problem with mine, with the same results that you got when I dropped the front drive shaft. It turned out to be the Viscous Coupling. Good luck.

oh man, I hope not. I'm going to replace the pin bearing in the axle payday. There is a slight "clunk" when I move the shaft there. I want to fully trouble shoot that front axle before I get into major $$$

Update for this thread

I was finally able to start buying parts! I replaced the front drive shaft. Drove it around for about 45 minutes. Noise is completely gone.

At the end near the CV joint there was an 1/2 inch chunk of metal gone and I'm 90% certain the shaft was a bit bent.

Now on to the transmission/fuel pump and brake lines!
