93 zj 5.2 trans. problem
my auto trans acts like I'm not pushing in the clutch on a standard when I stop. It doesn't do this all the time. Whats up?

Check your fluid level. Be sure to check it in NEUTRAL, not PARK. It makes a difference of about 1 quart.

Sounds like the torque converter clutch is not Turing off. Could be as simple as a bad brake light switch causing the problem.

Sorry. I didn't read the "not" part of the "pushing in the clutch"

I put in a can of trans x and its better. This thing acts really strange. I've put 8000 miles on it since I've had it. Most of the time it acts like the torque con. is not locking up. Like cruising down the road I can tell its not locked up but not all the time sometimes it acts normal. Are these electric torque converters? Supposedly the trans was rebuilt shortly before I bought it.

If you have the AW4 trans, I'm not sure how it's built, BUT the 42re has a solenoid that controls the lock-up by porting fluid to the clutch. On the earlier trans, that is controlled by the Transmission Control Module. You'll have to research how to do this, but I've been told you can get transmission codes by the flashing of the O/D light.
My '00 WJ doesn't have a separate TCM and the PCM handles all the commands. Also, the codes appear in the odometer as number codes. My code for the torque converter clutch solenoid would be P0740. Your code should be 37.
The solenoid is mounted on the trans valve body inside the trans pan. It may be a faulty solenoid or a plugged orifice.

Im thinking he should have a 46RH trans, if that is the case (it is in my 93) the electronics are superficial. I have had outstanding luck with the Lucas product on wholly hydraulic transmissions.

I have the 46RH trans. I didn't get a chance to drive it last night. I'll try it this afternoon. Thanks to everyone who responded. Will keep you updated.

My '94 46RH shifts fine from 1st to 2nd, but not to 3rd. I have to speed up to about 32mph then let off the gas to go into 3rd. After that it's fine until I drop back to 2nd then it's the same process all over again. There doesn't seem to be any slipping and it pulls strong. Does this sound like a filter, solenoid, torque converter, or just a transmission that needs to be rebuilt?

From What I know about the 42/46re's, 1st and 2nd are hydraulically shifted and 3rd and 4th are shifted by the electronics. Your problem would seem to be governor pressure or speed sensor related.

I've had some similar problems. After the car warms up, its slow to get into first from a dead stop. If i shift to neutral and back to D it's fine. Also fine starting in 2nd.
Sometimes I get the "stuck in 2nd" effect..and I also find letting off the gas gets me to 3rd..
