a buddy of mine has a 92 or 93 grand and its got the 4.0 and 2hi 4hi 4lo n and 4pt how can i tell what it is

 

They didn't start making the ZJ Grand Cherokee until '93.

 

By what it is, what are you refering to.

The first year of the jeep grand cherokee was 1993 and the transfercase he has is the command trac NP231.

Also he most likely has the dana 30 upfront dana 35 in the rear.

 

o ok and he shaved embles so how can i tell which it is other than 4.0

 

its got no trans and he said thatd hed sell it for 500 but im doughtful about it because its trasted

 

The Grand Cherokee only came with the 4.0L straight 6 or a V8.

 

Was the 231 ever offered in the ZJ? He described the 242...

 

231 wasn't offered in a ZJ and yes that is a 242 shift pattern, much better than the 249 my 93 had.

 

NP231's were available in the ZJ.

The shift pattern described by OP is a bit confusing, a PT detent should also have a FT detent.. no 4HI on a 242.

 

its not worth $500 if it aint got a tranny... not a 93... and not if its trashed already... not even worth fixing...

The 242 I had had 2hi 4hi full time 4hi part time N and 4lo. According to Chrystler the ZJ didn't come with a 231, you might want to check the tag. The 231 has 2hi 4hi N and 4lo.
