Default 46RH weird issue

Well the tranny I put in seems to be working well, however I've noticed a few odd things. It seems to shift quickly at low speeds, and the other day it randomly didn't shift, it got up to about 3k rpms until I pulled over, killed it, started it again and it drove home fine. I have new fluid and filter in it, and the cable is already adjusted within the 1mm spec.

Any help??

To clarify .. It only stops shifting under harder acceleration... For example when I hit passing gear, after driving about 20 seconds after the hard acceleration it doesn't shift and seems to go into limp mode. It goes between 30-40mph at 2k rpm.... Any help is great guys .. I just put this tranny in and have no idea what's going on

Start w/ following the dozen transmission diagnostic pages in the FSM.

What is the fluid condition? Is the fluid level okay? Is the throttle linkage properly adjusted and not binding? Is the filter clean? Has the valve body been dropped, inspected and the servo operation verified using compressed air? Has the front band been adjusted to specification? Have the fluid pressures been measured? Have the servos been inspected? Is the 1-2 shift valve or governor plug sticking?

Fluid level is good, fluid is about a month old as well as the filter. I am adjusting the bands tomorrow after I get off work. Besides that, what are some easy tests to do that could relate to my issues? I don't want to go through everything for nothing and waste time and money.

That is a good plan. Good luck w/ that.

When you discover how to identify the problem source on the first test from a full list of potential sources, please do a write up on that process.

Use the FSM to determine the potential source based on the symptoms.

Is the fluid clean?

I have to agree go the your FSM and go through that routine till you find it is all I would know to do also. If mine had pages for the XJ one it would be worn out.

Auto trans I know nothing about so I take mine to a shop cheaper in the long run for sure, at least in my case.

That was my situation too, I knew nothing about the workings of my transmission, so I brought mine to a local "expert" and they screwed up the job totally.

This topic shows my first foray into the transmission, w/ my total rebuild / upgrade.

Alright so after some investigation I've decided that tomorrow I am going to drop the pan, replace the filter again, adjust the bands to factory spec, then install a new governor solenoid. Anything else you'd all recommend?

Follow the FSM.

Run the compressed air tests. Measure the port pressures. Adjust the throttle linkage. Disassemble the valve body and inspect the 1-2 shift valve and the governor plug.

If this wasn't my daily driver to work every day I would have time to do that, at this point I don't have the time. It is shifting through all the gears fine under regular driving conditions.
