Question 42RE multiple codes 21-23-22-55

Hi All,

Been a proud owner of a 1998 ZJ Laredo for two and a half years now, and just got finished a major rework of brakes, rear axle, front steering and various other suspension shenanigans. After finding out the my D35 was missing what appears to have been 1/8" or more of shims on the carrier, and the cross-pin bolt snapping off with only two threads to come out, the axle was replaced as part of the work. I guess that explains why Dana was howling so loud...now i can hear my front wheel bearings digging their own grave

I recently bought a 1995 ZJ Laredo from a coworker for a good price (originally for a parts unit for the 98, and the fact it had brand new tires on it) shortly after the transmission began giving her problems. After getting this rig into the shop and doing a look over the chassis, body, engine and transmission, I've made the decision that this rig is far too good in one piece to just turn it into my own personal Pick-n-pull.

I've done some research into this transmission and what to look at, possible causes, etc. The symptom that put this thing out of service seems to be a common problem - no 1st or second in drive range, and taking off in third gear. I've got a hold of some documentation for the transmission, watched some YouTube videos and read some other forum posts. After doing the key on-off-on-off--on shuffle, i am getting codes 21, 23, 22, and 55 through the OD OFF lamp (in that order) which points to the governor, TCC, and OD solenoids being problematic. This stood out as a very unlikely situation that all three solenoids tanked at the same time, so I'm looking at the one (maybe two) common things between the three, being the 12V line (pin 1) on the harness, and possibly the TCM itself having tanked.

As I've just got this thing on stands this weekend, I'm wondering if anyone else has run into the same problem on this forum. I didn't find anything in a search regarding multiple solenoid codes like this, especially that i have nothing pointing to the governor transducer/sender. I'll admit that i just hooked the battery back up before the test (on stands) after coming off of the charger after work tonight.

I'm fully aware that even after sorting this out, a road test may reveal slipping and a full rebuild may be necessary (389,000KM is a fair chunk of mileage), but several engine leaks I have discovered have prepared me for the probability of an engine and trans pull soon enough anyway - I've got the tools and space for that, and it's another good excuse to stay away from a desk on weekends.

Any input is greatly appreciated, I'd love to have another good runner in the motor pool.

Cheers
