242 swap problem- VIC
I recently swapped in a used 242. I took out the bad 249 from the 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited and put in a 242 from a 1998 Grand Cherokee (Sport??). I had no problems with the swap and everything went great. I changed the bezel and even took out the VIC and unplugged the red connectors and plugged in the black connectors.
The problem is that now the VIC reads "PARTIME" while in two wheel drive? The VIC reads correctly in every other selection but wont go back to the normal setting for two wheel drive.
I'm thinking it is the Shift Indicator Sensor. Thoughts???
BTW- I do have the sensor from the 249 that I could try.

This may seem obvious, but can you confirm that you are actually in 2WD?
I did this swap a few years back and seem to remember having to use parts for the shift linkage from both the 249 and 242 cases in order to hit all the shifts. Even now I have to push the lever way down/forward to make sure it locks into 2WD. I will probably be trying to adjust that sometime soon.
If you are 100% in 2WD and the VIC isn't reading right, then the sensor would be my first suspect although I don't think the 249 sensor would work for you.
Where did you get your bezel? I have been looking (not too hard) for one for a while.

Just went and did some looking. Apparently your 249 sensor will work if that is the problem.
231/242 Linkage
This is optional. From the factory, the linkage that connects the transfer case to the pivot arm is about 2" shorter on the 231 and 242. If you can easily source the linkage, I recommend it. If not, don't concern yourself with it because you can easily adjust the shifter assembly to make due with the 249 linkage, which we will cover later. You do however NEED the shift tab from the transfer case you are swapping in, the long tab on the 249 will not work.
231/242 Shift Indicator Sensor
The NP249 sensor WILL NOT work in the 231, as the threaded portion is about 3 times longer. I attempted to shim it to no avail. You can however use the 249 sensor in a 242 case. XJ cases do not have the proper provision to have a fully functional VIC, however you can use the 4wd switch on the XJ to show "part time" when in 4wd.
