2011 Grand Cherokee Laredo X Towing
I really love my 70th Anniversary edition GC w. 4.7 V8. It did not come with the towing package. I added a Curt class 3 hitch as well as went through the programming gyrations the dealer has to do to get the wiring harness to power up.
I have been towing a 3500 lb boat for a few years with no issues at all. But now we want to tow an RV and take a couple weeks vacation with it. It looks like the towing capacity without the towing package is 5500 lbs and 7500 with the package. After doing the math, the RV it will tow without the package can only weigh 4000 lbs dry. All the RV's that size are too small to stay in for a couple weeks. So I am looking to see if you folks think I could move up to the 7500 capacity if I only add a transmission cooler. You can get a much larger RV in the 6000 dry weight category.
Any experience or suggestions in this dilemma?

One other thing you get with the tow package is lower axle gearing. The standard axle gears on a non-tow jeep is 3.55. The tow package is 3.73. This may not seem a large difference but it puts less strain on the transmission. The aux trans cooler is a must because of the added heat created in the torque converter by towing. Anytime you are towing near max load, you should lock out the overdrive. This increases highway rpm and lower gas mileage.
IDK what your WK weighs, but my WJ weighs 4000 lbs. (registration curb weight 3970). Add a 6000 lbs trailer to that and you have 5 TONS! That's a lot of work for your 4.7 to do.
Do whatever you want, it's your call, but I wouldn't recommend it.
