Default 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2 wheel drive

Hello, I just picked up a Jeep for real cheap and the only problem is that it needs a transmission. I have no experience in Jeeps at all. I was wondering which transmissions can I use like out of which Jeeps are compatible and such with no modifications. I found a few cherokees at my local junk yard, but none are the same exact one.

Okay, here's a short tutorial on your jeep. It depends on weither it's a I6 or V8 as to which transmission it has in it. Also, it being a 2wd makes it scarce. Your jeep is the WJ model built from 99-04 and if it's a 6 cylinder 4.0L, it's got the 42re transmission in it. The 4wd models have a different tailshaft on the transmission with the transfer case bolted to it. Yours wouldn't have that. Check out wjjeeps.com for more info. Also you can pick up a Haynes Repair Manual for the basic stuff.

Also, the 42re used in the WJ has features not found in earlier 42re's because the speed sensors are built into the case and not external. So, you'll need a transmission from a 99-04, or you can have your existing trans rebuilt. This is most likely why you bought it cheap.

In my opinion, if the body is good and it's a 4.0L, it's worth saving. If it's a 4.7 V8, which I doubt since it's a 2wd, I'd dump it quick.
