JGC VIN states 4x4 but Front Wheel DriveWhere do I start? We bought a Jeep Grand Cher
Where do I start? We bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee that we were told was a 4x4 (this is our first jeep) back in 2007. The VIN brings up a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4. We just found out it is actually a front wheel drive. In 2003, the year our Jeep is listed as, there were no front wheel Grand Cherokees; or at least that's what our service rep told us. We looked back and found front wheel drives in 2001. So now the question is, do we have a 2003 or a 2001? We bought the Jeep used of course and are wondering how easy it is to fake something like that... Our Jeep service rep is tracing the VIN back to the manufacturer to see what he can find out, and the dealership we bought the Jeep from, is looking into compensation for selling us a front wheel drive instead of a 4x4, since obviously there would be a price difference. Besides all of this, we've had this Jeep in the shop more than 10 times (I kid you not) at a cost of over $8,000 in repairs. Oh, and we just put the Jeep back in the shop Tuesday, picked it up today and two hours later the engine light came on again for the umpteenth time! Between what we paid for it, what we put down as a down payment and what we've paid in repairs, we'd just about have a brand new Jeep. We're so frustrated that today I gave the keys to our service rep and told him I was through! Thoughts?

uhhhhh I think you NEED to go to a different dealer....cuz they are either pulling your leg or trying to consume your cash on this one...If you have a Grand Cherokee then you have either rear wheel drive (2wd), 4 wheel drive or All wheel drive...NEVER front wheel drive in a cherokee.

why would you even think you have a front wheel drive grand cherokee, its been said before that there were never any front wheel drive grands, what are the selections next to the 4x4 shifter, is it really that hard to figure out what you have that you have to have the service rep contact the manufacture? seriously..... it should be obvious, do you even have a 4x4 shifter, if not you have a 2wd that is rear wheel drive

Easy way to check if its 4X4 or 2WD is to look if there is a lever next to the one where you put in drive/reverse ect. It should say Select trac, Quadra Trac, or Quadra Drive if its a 4x4 vehicle. Select trac giving you the option of 2wd and 4wd. You can also look under the vehicle.. Does it have 2 drive shaft's ? One in the front and one in the rear. Is there a front and rear differential ? Differential would be the big circular thing in the middle of the axle.
Oh and i dont want to beat the dead horse anymore but there were no front wheel drive grand cherokee's. And $8000 for repairs ? What exactly did you have repaired. Id like to see the list if you dont mind ? The only thing i can think off that would equal $8,000 would be a brand new engine AND a brand new transmission, AND both front and rear axles replaced at the same time
This to me sounds like you got ripped off and that mechanic is just suckering you into more repairs that probably dont even need to be done.
