2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo V8 4.6 auto transmission rebuild
I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo v8 4.6 4 wheel drive automatic with 173000 miles on it. I am interested in rebuilding the transmission but am wondering if any one here has done it and has any tips. I found a rebuild kit online through (Omix) for a little under $800. How hard is it to rebuild the tranny in these models?

Welcome to CF!
Rebuilding a transmission is no piece of cake and if you've never done one before, I'd suggest you get some experienced help. There are specialized tools needed for some parts and an extreme attention to detail is required.
I'm not saying you can't do it, I've rebuilt a GM THM 700R4 myself, but I've had hydraulics training and worked on cars for about 50 years.
You'll need a long clean workbench to lay out the parts in the order they came out or you can get confused about what goes where. You may have to buy new spacer plates to maintain the specified clearances on the clutch packs and a press to remove/replace snap rings. A good tech manual is critical.

Thanks! I've helped with a 96 dodge cummins so have a little bit of an idea and am usually pretty good when it comes to stuff like that. Any tips to make it go smoother?

The best tip I have is to have a shop do the rebuild. They have the experience, the tools, and a warranty in case something happens.

Can I buy a rebuild kit and have them use that? Ive heard it can be up to 3500 to get it done at a shop and don't really wanna spend that much right now.

Talk to a few shops, most won't warranty somebody else's parts. The big savings would be from pulling and installing the transmission yourself.

The 3500 is for the shop to pull it rebuild it and put it back in.Most trans shops will let you pull the trans and they rebuild it a lot cheaper then them doing it.The last trans i dropped off cost me like 500 bucks to have rebuilt but i knew the trans guy.

Which transmission?
This blog has the BEST on-line details for rebuilding a 46RH that I have found.
+1 on specialized tools. Some can be fabricated yourself w/ a welder and machine shop.
+1 on great documentation. The FSM is a good start.
The ATSG is a very good resource. They sell documentation. They also offer unlimited support for a specific problem / vehicle for 30 days for $35 for non-members.
