2/3 Shift slip with P0783 code - 2003 4.0L 2wd automatic
Hello Guys and Gals. New here to the forum. My old man just handed me down this gem due to his getting on in his years and picking up a sedan I found for him. Anyway, as stated in the title, she is having trouble getting into third from second, revving up to about 3k rpm before grabbing 3rd most of the time. Although once in a while it seems to shift somewhat normally though. My knowledge on transmissions is limited, but i do have some, and that bit about it shifting ok once in a while leads me to believe its not a lost cause. But you guys are the pros, so here goes... My first question pertains to the shift solenoid for 2/3. My AllData shows a 3/4 SS, a TCC solenoid, a gov. press. sensor and a gov press. solenoid, but nothing indicating anything for 1/2, or 2/3.
What am i missing here? Just before he handed her over to me, he found that the trans had lost a couple of quarts of fluid, and i found a leak when i checked it out, and fixed it. But apparantly it was too late, as she wont shift 2/3 smoothly anymore. The other thing I was hoping someone could clarify is whether I have the 42RE trans or the 545RFE (think its for the V8). Im also picking up a 97 4wd ZJ this weekend for some fun in the mud that I'll probably be needing some tips or advice on, so I'm sure you all will be seeing a lot of me from here on out. Thanks in advance for any and all help you guys provide, and hopefully in time, i can pay it forward.

It's possible a shift spool in the valve body is hung up. The 42re shifts 1-2 and 2-3 hydraulically. The shift solenoid only gets involved from 3-4. However, a fault code will be set whenever the TCM detects the output shaft speed doesn't match the engine rpms for the selected gear.
