1999 GC Limited 4.7L Slow cranking won't start
Hey All,
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!!!
I am new to Jeep ownership. I just purchased a 1999 GC Limited 4.7L with 114k miles. Former owner was driving it and it died on him. I was told it seized by the friend selling it but found that the motor turns, I have spark and gas pressure. I do smell some gas from the engine compartment when trying to start it. The motor turns slower than to be expected. I had one active code found by turning the key that was an alternator/charging circuit code which cleared when I put in a new battery hoping to fix the issue. It did not. The motor turns but slowly. I cleaned the battery terminals. All the lights and other electronics work just fine. Could the starter be the issue? Or could it be the crank position sensor? Would the CPS cause it to die when driving? That could be the alternator which may have kicked the code but until I get it to start I won't have a clue about that. Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated. I have searched the forum and read dozens of posts but most with the slow cranking got the engine to fire up where as I can not even get a sputter. I look forward to any suggestions!!!! And hopefully my $300 investment will not need a new motor as the previous owner thought!!!!

Take your starter to an automotive electric shop and have it tested. It may have been overheated trying to start a seized motor. It's probably not producing enough torque. If it's drawing too many amps, there's not much left for the rest of the systems.
Tried new starter and battery and still got no where. Checked the compression and had 0 in all cylinders.....changed the motor and all was good for 6 months then the new used motor blew a head gasket. Just put in a rebuilt 0 mile motor . Now have a P1698 code from time to time and the tranny won't shift at all and starts out in drive. I could use some help with what wires to test to check for a break or a bad TCM......any help would be appreciated!!
