What is the difference in a 231J and a 231C transfer case. Mine has a 231J in it now and I want to know what my options are for replacement.

The 231J came out of your Jeep (obviously), and came with either a 21 or 23 spline input depending on the size of your trans. The 231C is basically the same transfer case with a 27 spline, made to fit a Blazer or Jimmy. The bolt patterns are not the same, it's still 6 bolts, but off from the Jeep/Dodge pattern. Check craigslist for the exact TC you are looking for, I just bought one this week with the shifter for $150. Just make sure you get the 21 or 23, whichever you need.
