Default 02 42RE wont shift

This might be a more appropriate place for this question. My 02 started giving me sporadic shift problems. Before it would only shift at around 4k. Then eventually it just stopped and wouldn't come out of 1st gear. I replaced the filter and changed the fluid. Held up for a few days then crapped. I dropped the pan and was going to replace the TCS. In the process I found the limit valve spring in the valve body was snapped in half. I ordered the spring from Chrysler. But my ultimate question is do you guys think this will solve my problem?

Thanks Dave. Feel like it's pretty simple. If you locate the problem and then find a broken part... Boom.

The question is, what caused the spring to break? Was it metal fatigue or a mechanical fault? Any spring can break, but if a compression spring is compressed to "coil bind" enough times, it will eventually break. I've seen this problem with guys who install high lift camshafts and use OEM valve springs.

Make sure that whatever that spring limits the travel of is not overtraveling.

I wondered the same thing. But after going to the JY in search of a replacement and finding the same broken spring a handful of times, it seems to be a mechanical fault.

My daughters 96 shifts something like yours. Seems fine when cold but when warm it doesnt like to shift out of 1st very well. The shifts seem late.

I gave up on it. I've had strep for almost a week and I need wheels as soon as I'm on my feet so I had a friend drop it off at a Chevy dealership because we have a connection there. As soon as the guy pulled the valve body apart he told my friend he's gonna replace the TCS but needs to drop the tranny. So hopefully it'll be in one piece come tomorrow afternoon.
