Inserts would look good on a ZJ. Not a bad price for under $20 and a couple hours of your time.

6 hours into it so far. Still have to grind, weld in rub rails and bed coat. I think I will have 10 to 12 hours into both sides completed. Still better then $475 a side and you would have to paint and install them. The metal supermarket sold me 1/8 inch plate instead of 10 gauge. 1/8 doesn’t want to bend. The hardest part was figuring out how to bend the metal for the body curve. Without a 6’ bender. I finally ran two cuts with a cut off wheel on the back side. Then bent it over a 4x4. You can barely see them. I like the effect it gives.See the red lines.Needed to use a few more self tappers then expected. The idea of the stainless hand rails didn’t work. They are way to thin. Going to get Two 1 1/2 od tubes from metal supermarket and take them to the exhaust shop and get them manderal bent tomorrow. Also welded a panel to connect the body armor with rub rail to the lower body armor. No kit I’ve seen does that. See the blue.

Armor looks good. I'm in the same boat actually with my 2 door if I ever want to armor the sides. Make sure you put some rtv around the perimeter of the armor when you finish it so you don't have mud/water causing rust behind them over time.

Other side only took 3 hours to get this far. Cutting the gas door out was a pain. Tomorrow weld in rub rails, grinding, paint and rtv backside. Then bed coat outside.

Finished the body armor and rub rails today. I got 083 wall tubing from the metal supermarket for the rub rails. Went to the exhaust shop, to have it bent. The first one bent perfectly, the second one almost kinked. You wouldn’t want to go any thinner wall tubing though. I don’t recommend using an exhaust shop. You would want to take it to a fab shop, were they have a heavy duty manderal bender. I think it turned out pretty good for the cost

Thanks greasemonkey. The 1/8 plate added about 25 lbs a side. My neighbor stood on it,to get to the rack and it’s rock solid. Don’t have to worry about smashing my quarters in.

Went up again. This time the brakes almost went totally out. It basically felt like manual brakes. I think the outer brake rod between the master cylinder and hydroboost was cut to short and didn’t work right. I made one. Because the rebuilt hydroboost didn’t come with a outer rod, spring and retainer. I also needed to tighten all the power steering lines. They can loosen up after the first few heat cycles. Then Im going to take my custom rod out and get a core hydroboost from the wrecking yard, pull off what I need and put it back in. Also going to replace the power steering pump. It was making a little noise when I turn. I know the hydroboost was putting extra stain on a already worn out pump. If anyone wants to take on hydroboost. You need to know the rebuilt ones in the store don’t come with the outer brake rod, spring or retainer. You need to get the same year make and model core from the wrecking yard. To get what you need. The parts stores also charge for a core anyway. So be prepared.

Since my cherokee is a sport model with a SE trim package and was owned by the City of Washington State. It has no interior options other then a/c. I already put in a drivers power seat track. I just bought a 1994 factory speaker pod. Removed the headliner materials, scuffed it and painted it tan. Now It’s time to upgrade the sound system. I bought a kenwood x303 deck, kicker comp 10 sub, kicker 300 watt amp with grille, kicker cs 6.5 door speakers and kicker 5.25 overhead pod speakers.

I didn’t want to waste my money on a plastic sub box that mounts it the cubby compartment in my interior quarter panel. Instead of spending $225 on the xj pod and being limited to a 8” sub.I just bought a 10” better quality subwoofer and amp. In my first Cherokee I built one, in my second Cherokee I bought the plastic xj pod. This time I decided to go down to Home Depot and got a sheet of 2’ x 4’ 1/2” mdf and built it myself. I didn’t want to cut into the plastic trim and I only buy kicker products. The kicker comp 10 was a little expensive but it was the only one shallow enough to not have to cut into the quarter trim or use an ugly spacer. To make the plastic a little denser inside the cubby I used some dynomat. There might not be a lot of air space for the subwoofer, but it’s not a competition rig and it still sounds great. When I get out to the garage I will take a pic of the finished sub box.

In all my cherokees I have always wanted a overhead console and mount a cb to it, but have never had one. So I bought an overhead center console. Then I bought a $38 cobra cb from Walmart.

When I removed the headliner material off the console I reallized the factory used about a gallon of glue. It took almost 2 hours to remove all the glue. Then the glue etched the console so bad I had to spray it with bedliner spray and then painted it tan. Also after all the material was taken off.Jeep had some really strange holes cut into the plastic. So I am in the process of making a pvc plastic trim panel. I will put some pics of the finished console when it’s done.
