I have noticed a high pitch whining that occurs when I start the Jeep. The pitch gets higher (not louder) when I press on the gas. I thought it might have been a bad fan clutch so I replaced that but it didn't fix the problem. After some research, it sounds like it could be the alternator or the idler pulley. Any thoughts?

Thanks. I'm going to replace it next week. I'll let you know if that was the problem

I replaced the idler pulley today and I still have the high pitched whine. It doesn't sound like a belt squeel. I'm hoping that it's the alternator. I have the new part and will try to replace it next week. Any ideas as to what it could be?

We had to drill out a few rusted bolts but it wasn't too bad of a project. I also got a set of 31x10.50r15 General Grabber AT2

Have the alternator tested. It sounds like a bad alternator, also check the starter.

Best way is to have someone start the XJ for ya while you stand in front and just stick your head around to listen for the sound...while being safe of course

And nice rig, I'm over here in VA, about and hour from you. We should meet up sometime!

It's been a while but I've done a few things and have a few in the works. I've installed a new radio and ran the USB through the vent, around the back of the dash, into the molding on the A post, and hooked it up to an iPhone charger/adapter. It's out of the way and allows for easy access to my music. I've also installed a drop pitman arm to fix some of my steering issues and I've installed a new bumper from Nates 4X4. I've ordered a tire carrier from Detours and will post pics when it arrives. Other than that, I'm looking to upgrade to 33s with some lower backspacing. I'm running 31s on 15x7 stock Jeep wheels right now and I hate the stance. The Jeep looks like its ready to tip over. Can I go with a 15x8 wheel, 4.0 backspacing, and spacers or will that be way too much? Sorry for such a noob question but I don't really know if that would be overdoing it.

I wouldn't add spacers. Just try the new rims first.

Thanks. I've heard both positives and negatives about spacers. Some guys swear by them but I'm not sold yet.

As she sits now. While waiting for my rear tire carrier, I took 3 pieces of steel with holes 9 inches apart, ran them underneath my safari rack, ran 2 ten inch bolts through the holes and up through the tire. I sandwiched the tire with 3 more pieces of steel to create a rack tire carrier. The overall cost was around $20.

Just installed the Knucklebone carrier from Detours. This thing is awesome. Mark from Detours was very helpful and the communication was great. I highly recommend checking them out if you haven't already. He does a lot if custom fab work
