Jack the front axle off the ground. Grab the top and bottom of your tire and push/pull. Or you can get the tires about 2 inches off the ground, put a pry bar under there and pry up. Check for movement in your ball joints.

OEM spicer. They should last you a long time, and cheaper than the fancy 200+ dollar ones. I just put new ball joints in mine, as far as I could tell they were the originals from 170k miles ago and had very little play.

The MJ i looked at a while back had the DW, and it was a bad ball joint, iirc.

In any case, it can be fun to play with something on a shoestrings budget. whats the fun in just going out and buying something when you can cobble your own creation together out of odds and ends?

Good luck with your new job! it isnt flying super spooky secret planes out of Wright-Patt, is it?

Thanks for that but looks like I won't be able to get to it until Saturday my wife's Chevy blew a head gasket so that's taking up all the garage space right now... Also I just figured out I have an 8.25 not a D35... So that's good but I feel like an idiot. Also I have been having this grinding sound coming from my rear Diff so I am going to change the fluid Saturday and see if that quiets things down hopefully its not screwed up....

that sucks about the Shibby, seems like there's always a wrench to jack up your plans.

good thing is you should have the 29 spline 8.25 which is comparable to a D44

Can you describe the grinding noise?

The grinding sound is like tires going down a gravel road but really fast and is only intermittent and that is good to know I will check when I service the Diff this weekend

I think I actually found the grinding noise..... My exhaust was rubbing the rear driveshaft and this morning it decided to let go... luckily I loaded up my tools and stuff last night so I wasn't sliding around on the ice this morning. Now I am going to get rid of this cherry bomb cat and put a slowmaster super 44 on it I am also going to change the diff fluid cause it is long overdue

I had my muffler let go on me when someone forces me off the road and into a deep pool of water. it was hanging for about a half mile before i could get pulled over, then i lay in the rain an hour trying to get it the rest of the way off with the tools i had with me.

My new jeep has no muffler currently so im almost in the same boat as you!

Changed my diff fluid this morning that she*t smelled horrible. Found this little chunk out of the spider gear? I think that's what it is called doesn't look too bad so I am not worried about it. Also had my exhaust fall off yesterday morning on my way to work.... I found the source of the grinding noise though haha the rear exhaust hanger had rusted out and it finally gave way then for a couple off weeks the exhaust was just hanging and rubbing on the driveshaft until it finally broke yay gotta get my welder working correctly and get that taken care of. I might take it to a shop and have them redo the entire thing since the cherry bomb was a little loud for my tastes
