only times I ever used a torque wrench is torquing down the head bolts and the rocker arm bolts

For everything else, I measure in grunts

I used to do that more, but I checked a tie rod bolt I thought was good by hand and found I was almost 15 foot pounds shy. It was on a Jeep that had ny-lock nuts instead of castle nuts and now I use a torque wrench on anything I prefer not to fall off or fail while driving that's over 35ft-lbs or under 20ft-lbs or so. I don't want to overstress/stretch bolts to the point of breaking or strip a nut. And it really doesn't add too much time. Another interesting thing is that adding lubricants or anti-seize throws off torque measurements too. Generally torque measurements are meant for dry nuts/bolts.

When a friend was doing my gear installs and I was helping him, we used torque wrenches. I've never done head work on my jeep yet. I just see how hard it was to take it off and put it on with about the same force

Torque values are for more than keeping your parts from falling off-

Can you get away without using a torque wrench?
Sure, but if you're a decent mechanic you follow proper tolerances and torques.
Mechanics is more than bolting sh*t up

Gotcha- just sayin' it's one of the tools you should use. If grunts work for ya, great.

Matter of preference I guess, but I'll ALWAYS use a torque wrench.

Anyone want to team up and help each other win some FREE Husky liners for our Jeeps? Husky has a contest every week on Facebook and there is a Dodge forum that usually teams up and takes it every time. Think we can beat em? We can rotate every week and help each other win. Who's with me?
