I used to do that more, but I checked a tie rod bolt I thought was good by hand and found I was almost 15 foot pounds shy. It was on a Jeep that had ny-lock nuts instead of castle nuts and now I use a torque wrench on anything I prefer not to fall off or fail while driving that's over 35ft-lbs or under 20ft-lbs or so. I don't want to overstress/stretch bolts to the point of breaking or strip a nut. And it really doesn't add too much time. Another interesting thing is that adding lubricants or anti-seize throws off torque measurements too. Generally torque measurements are meant for dry nuts/bolts.

Torque values are for more than keeping your parts from falling off-
Can you get away without using a torque wrench?
Sure, but if you're a decent mechanic you follow proper tolerances and torques.
Mechanics is more than bolting sh*t up

Matter of preference I guess, but I'll ALWAYS use a torque wrench.

Anyone want to team up and help each other win some FREE Husky liners for our Jeeps? Husky has a contest every week on Facebook and there is a Dodge forum that usually teams up and takes it every time. Think we can beat em? We can rotate every week and help each other win. Who's with me?
