Everyone has their thing. It would personally be difficult for me to move from a clean 99 to a 01 with 0331. That is if the 99 was an early model without the 0331. Hopefully the cooling system is just dirt and not milky. Good luck! I'll keep watching.

It doesn't matter if it's early or late 1999. All 1999 XJs had the 0630 head. They didn't switch the production line over to the 0331 until the break to set up the 2000 model year.

I felt the same way, but after looking over this 2000 for quite some time i could tell it is an all around better XJ. Great maintenance history, everything is better on this one, except for the head problem, which i felt like a could take a chance with.
My white XJ before i bought it, had a horrible maintenance history. Hell the last time it was at a dealer for service was in 2004 lol. Lucky not that much was wrong when i got it.

I've heard a couple times that some late model 99's had it. But I always thought the same, that it was just 00-01. Oh well. Either way, I'm keeping away from the 0331 if I can. My 00 cracked, and two of my buddies 01's cracked. Is it a guarantee that it will happen? No. Is it likely? Yes. If I found an immaculate 00 or 01, I'd pick it up and just have a head on standby.

So because it didn't go to a dealer it wasn't serviced? Or maybe the po did it themselves like most of us do haha

The guy i bought it from called it a "Grand" cherokee and thought it had a V6 in it...

So lets be realistic, i know he didn't know much about it lol. If there was service done it was the bare minimum(oil change thats all)

There's always someone who says this, but nobody can ever produce a pic of this unicorn. The '99 WJs had the 0331. The '99 XJs did not. Some of the '00s were built in '99, but that doesn't make them '99 model year vehicles.

A factory typically shuts down for maintenance and retooling between model years, and they set the line up for the coming model year during that down time. The 0331 brought with it a new coil rail, new wiring harness, new computer, new emissions system, new exhaust manifolds, new exhaust that was routed differently from earlier years, new transmission mount (it had to be offset for the 0331's new exhaust) and low pinion Dana 30 (the HP D30 would put the drive shaft in a place that would bang into the 0331's exhaust). The line had to be shut down to make these changes. It would make absolutely no sense whatsoever to shut down and retool for a few '99s, then shut down again for the 2000 model year.

ok one more before we clog up the ops thread. I did see a 99 with an 0331 head last February or March. If I new it was so rare I woukd have snapped a pic haha. The man who owned it, bought it since new and said he never replaced the head. Only reason I noticed was because another guy who worked with me also enjoyed xjs and he saw the coil and had to ask the gentleman if he was sure it was a 99. I also have a 99 so that is when I first found out that some 99s came with an 0331 head and everything else that the 00-01 did. Of course what you are saying does make sense. All I'm saying is that I did see the "unicorn" haha! Of course it could of been a 00-01, but he was one of those older guys that has a notebook and folder of everything he has ever done since purchase and the reciept ir whatever from the dealer said 1999. Could the factoryvhave shut down early and had 99s that werent finished and had to go through an update? Sorry op we delved into a different convo about unicorns haha.

Got some work done today. Installed a new radiator, thermostat, water pump and flushed the cooling system. Also installed a trans cooler.
Now i just need to find a new EFan since mine is crapped out.
I'm definitely going to stay on top of this cooling system because of the head problem.
But for now she's running great, was 80 degrees today and i didn't even reach the 210 mark on my temp gauge

New VS old water pump.

New radiator in.

Also since i had the grille off i threw in a trans cooler to help it out.

Next job will be the oil change.
This will be fun, the PO broke the plastic dipstick handle off so now i have to take out the dipstick tube from the block.
