Yes - I did see that.
I was trying to duplicate that without all the other little bits.
The head comes with valves pre-installed so I didn't need the valve stem gaskets
and I wasn't planning on doing the injectors at least for a while - I think that's what the other small ones where -
But if I'm adding the thermostat gasket by fel-pro - then the price advantage for just getting the individual parts evaporates.
I think I'm going to switch head gasket to the Fel-Pro 530SD
pricing / availability issue -
and I'm going to stick with the MS93094 intake / exhaust gasket
I'll sort out the heater hoses later - I've got sometime before I'm ready to put those on
but thanks for the tip on the barbed fitting.. I was thinking of running silicone anyway and this would help with that switch.
I also added the Fel-Pro gaskets for the thermostat housing and the water pump - so cheap on Rock Auto...
I've got the cart down just over 200 for the parts
and then the 35 for the accessories (Funnel, RTV, Scraper)
This is the maintenance the jeep needs - and I am starting to get excited about driving it again.
IT'S BEEN MONTHS.
It feels good to putting things Back ON the jeep instead of taking them off.
I got distracted by a broken bolt on the air conditioning compressor -
and then had more difficulty getting the water pump off - pulley was seized on pretty good.
(is there a source for replacement pulleys?)
But then - cleaned and cleaned and cleaned the mating surface - and dropped the new head on - got it all torqued down and calling it a night.
Later - I got the new water pump installed, re-inserted the push rods and rockers, drilled and tapped the hole for the a/c compressor and got that reinstalled.
I also reinstalled the spark plugs (not that many miles on them) and the coil pack. Then I started cleaning the valve cover and destroying the pcv valve. I thought about replacing the valve cover bolts and looked for a kit.. and looked...and looked. nope.

Reason: added pic
quick update - made a lot of progress this past weekend.
( wish I had more time during the week but there just isn't )
Let's see - the following has been put back:
exhaust manifold
intake manifold
(can we just take a moment in appreciation for the special partners we have that support and sometimes help with our crazy jeep hobbies? Would not have gotten these manifolds on without my awesome wife)
valve cover with new gasket
(new) thermostat housing with thermostat
(new) power steering pump - with new pulley - more on this below
(new) belt
fan shroud / housing
fan
throttle body with new gasket
(new) "pcv" / "ccv" valve and elbow thingys with new grommets
I feel like I'm missing something..
Drained the oil - installed new filter (still have to add oil)
All that's left is to add fluids (oil, flush / add coolant, power steering)
and reinstall the battery - !!! this weekend at the latest - going to get some fittings to facilitate flushing the coolant hopefully tomorrow.
oh yeah -and reinstall the air filter.
SO - the stupid power steering pump - this thing cost me HOURS
I thought I would pull the pulley off and clean it up and see if I could track a leak.
well - I bought the wrong pulley puller - in my haste - I got a jaw type. so I tried it anyway - and broke a little bit off the pulley - probably still could have used it.
but I bought a new pulley - it was in stock at the local O'Reilly's yay.
Also, I went and got the "right" puller - except I opted for the cheap harbor freight one - not the more expensive one - so it didn't fit the flange as well as I thought it should.
anyway - pealed the lip off the flange - yay. this is where I got stubborn.. kept trying and peeled more of the flange off.
Did research - got the "Bearing separator" tool from HF - this one
that needed to sit flush - broke the pulley more to fit the puller - LITERALLY BENT THE BOLTS OF THIS TOOL - the pulley was so seized on there
tried the bigger one (started to bend THOSE BOLTS TOO) - threw in the towel and found a pump at the AutoZone in Belleville - about a 20 minute drive.
Took in destroyed "core" and got new pump with reservoir
Got home and discovered there was NO CAP? - like are you kidding me?
looked to see about getting a new cap from local stores - no that doesn't fit your jeep - really? FINE!
drove back out to the AutoZone - do you have the core still - with my cap?
Still have core - yes - have cap - no...
IT was at home on my table by the JEEP the WHOLE TIME.
so - instead of just replacing the pump and pulley to start with - ~100
I spent .. 20 on first puller - 40 on bearing puller - 20 on pulley and 70 on pump?
and countless hours trying to remove pulley and driving back and forth for no reason... Love it
After getting some hose fittings from the local ACE -
I got home Thursday - and got out the hoses -
the pole barn is about 150 ft from the nearest hose bibb and the temperatures were falling
I was able to flush the heater core in both directions without making too much mess -
ORANGE came out - ew - and it took quite a bit for it to run clear.
then I tried the radiator - my layflat hose was too small to fit over the hoses - so I just rigged it best I could
I flowed into the lower and drain out the upper
then I flowed into the upper and let drain out the lower -
I also flowed into the fill cap.
finally - I removed the thermostat - and flowed into the thermostat housing and let drain from the water pump
After this I connected all the new hoses
Reinstalled the air filter / tubing (aftermarket)
Put the battery in - and the hold down -
then broke the bottom tray over tightening the hold down nuts
Oh yeah - I did add Oil - and Power Steering fluid -
for now since the cooling passages was still gross - just used tap water from the now frozen hose
Jumped in and
IT STARTED!!!!
I was rather relieved and surprised and elated all at the same time.
IT'S ALIVE AGAIN!!
now I just have to figure out why my blower motor is NOT working ....
no rest...
Read up on the Blower Motor - and issues it could have.
tested the relay - that was fine
tested the resistor - replaced that in April of last year - still fine.
tested the switch - that worked.
tried to remove the motor itself - got it disconnected but no way was it coming out
tested the lead - providing 12v -
tested the motor - it worked.
put it all back together - and it worked - NO IDEA....
I hate that.
