Talking Jeep XJ "Spoingy"

This is my second XJ, my first was a 97 that I got in an emergency, I work for a local municipality and needed to get to work in the middle of a snow storm, my 4x4 pickup died, my loaner 4x4 from my Dad died, and I had to get to work. The 97 had a rod knock, valve ping, was beat all to hell, and smelled as bad inside as she looked outside but was 4.0 powered, Chrysler rear, high pinion dana 30 front, NP231 and it worked. drove it home in the snow in 4x4, drained the oil and replaced it with 50w racing oil and a half a quart of 90w (yeah yeah, but it worked) and the engine quieted down to a mild vibration and she got oil pressure again. Drove and beat on her for 3 or 4 years before selling her. That was 5 years ago and last month I was browsing through craigslist and spotted this 2000 XJ and all my nostalgia bells and whistles started sounding off! After some time convincing the wife (there may have been some begging and pleading, don't judge) I now own another XJ.

I was nervous what I was getting but have been pleasantly surprised. Exterior is in good shape, interior is in excellent shape, there were 3 different types of tires on it and all of them had matching dry rot starting, but the engine was smooth and quiet. Test drive showed me that it pulled to the left and had heavy vibration between 55 and 60mph. Oh, and the headliner is sagging, but that doesn't count. The week after I got it I made the decision I was gonna begin this build backwards to most I've done. Lift and big tires will be last, powertrain, electrical, dual batteries, power invertor, body armor, roof rack, lights, fast idle switch, compressor, etc will be first. Because of this I took it by my local shop and had 4 brand new Cooper Discoverer H/Ts put on it and a front end alignment done. My shop is pretty cool and lets me walk all around and under it when it's on the lift and look, pull, and shake anything I want through out the whole process to see what I have and I was pleased to discover virtually no rust and 4 new shocks! (best part is whoever did the stocks broke off the evil factory rear shock studs and replaced them with bolts, one thing I don't have to fight with)

Ok, enough tell, now for show! (I'll post updates as I do odds and ends to it)

My long term plan is for a daily driver/trail rig combo. 4.5" Rusty's off road long arm kit, fender cutouts, 33s or 35s depending on what fits, swap the rear axle for a D44 at least, I'd love to get a matched set of D44s from a JK Rubicon to mount under it, ARB lockers front and rear, frame stiffeners from bumper to bumper (good excuse to get that mig welder I've been wanting) roof rack, front and rear bumpers from JRC, dual battery setup, power inverter (welder if I can convince the wife with much begging and pleading) CB, light bars everywhere I can stick them, winch, NP242 swapped for a NP231 with Teraflex 4:1, pitch the 0331 head for a new cast from Clearwater Cylinder heads, fuel injector upgrade, THOR cowl intake, fast idle switch, compressor, and 1-ton steering upgrade probably with a steering box upgrade from a grand Cherokee/durango with brace. Also gonna stick body armor everywhere I can and add some good rock sliders.

That's the highlights at least. I'm expecting this project is gonna take me 2 or 3 years to "complete" but short term I'm gonna try and get the cowl intake and dual battery setup installed. I also wanna replace the headliner. I'm thinking my color theme is gonna be Burgundy, Black, and Neon Green. My wife found a nice neon green headliner on either amazon or eBay that's about the right price so I'm gonna grab that and do the visors at the same time. I'm thinking in the next few weeks I'm gonna take the cowl off and paint the black plastic screen under that green, I've got new bushings for the sway bar and sway bar links and while I have the sway bar out I'm gonna paint it green too. I'm going to change the fluids in the difs and transfer case pretty soon too and when I do that I'll paint the dif covers green as well. After that the track bar is gonna get some bushings and green paint too.

Over the weekend my battery died a miserable death and when I looked it was a cheapo Walmart battery from 2010 with junkyard numbers on it. Trip to Costco got me an $85 Interstate battery with 42 month free replacement, 800/1000 cranking amps, and a 110 reserve charge, and bonus, its got green on it. Full tuneup is on the horizon too. I'll update with pictures as I do things.

Oh, I almost forgot, took a trip to Harbor Freight and setup a tool bag just to keep in the Jeep, I took my old slime airpump/tire repair kit and tossed it in too, now I feel much better when I leave home.

Long term I'm looking for 4 to 6 inches of lift and a long arm kit. Short term I'm gonna be looking at some other upgrades, THOR cowl intake, dual batterys, headliner, hella H4 headlight upgrade, headlight wiring harness upgrade, wiring harness repairs, and a full tuneup. This past weekend I discovered the battery was a 10 year old cheapo walmart battery someone had pulled from a junkyard, replaced that with a 800/1000amp Interstate battery.

I also have a EVAP leak to track down and I'm gonna go ahead and put a new CPS on it. Needs some insulation on the injectors cause I've had some heat soak issues as well.

Quick update, I dug into the driver side wiring harness to fix the broken speaker wire. I didn't take any pictures cause I figured it was a simple fix.
