Since I can't do a whole lot to the engine till I get a new timing belt, I bought paint... Haha.
Gunna take the valve cover off today anyway to check the rockers and see if any of them are broken, so I figured I'd paint it while it's off. The plan is to paint it dark green and depending how metallic it comes out, I might spray that clear effex over it.
Also got some gold paint that is the closest to the color the Jeep is that I could find at Pepgirls.
I also might throw the battery back in so I can figure out why the radio doesn't work. Need my bumpin tunes yo.

................................ Holy crap.... Good thing I took the valve cover off. 7 out of 8 rockers are boned. No wonder the cam wouldn't move more than 1/8th turn before stopping at both extremes of rotation. Good thing rockers are available thru RockAuto... Wow..

Holy **** it don't take much to destroy those things. I sure feel like a dumb-*** now. Well, like the guy said, they are designed to break if there is interference. I guess they did their job.

The rockers are designed to be a fuse so the valves don't bend. But this thing was WAYYYYYY out of time and must've been cranked over enough to make 7 rockers snap.

Now here's the good news. I took the radio out and bench tested it. It works. The wiring in the Jeep looks like it was done by a 3-year-old and there are some disconnected/bare wires. So I'll have to straighten that out. No biggie.
And I totally forgot that I had a spare pair of 2nd gen power mirrors. I'm definitely going to be retrofitting these in since the 30 year old original manual ones don't work too well. Not sure what I'm going to do switch wise, but I might find a 1st gen that has power mirrors in the junkyard. Need to go there for a rear bumper anyway.

Painted the valve cover. Didn't put a whole lot of effort into it, but it came out pretty well. Dark metallic green with metallic clear sprayed over it and then clear engine enamel to make it more glossy and resistant to engine heat.
Idk. I was bored lmao.

Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
Well, let's hope those rockers did their thing... Because if not, it looks like it was a lot more than just bumped once when trying to start it. Yowza.
Don't forget, number one cylinder is at the firewall.

Yeah. It had to have been cranked for a couple rotations. And I'm gonna do the TDC procedure with an 8mm bolt and that access hole in the block. Fingers crossed there isn't any more damage

Just read the racejeep thread you two have going... Should have said you have that kind of background. Pick up some manuals on this thing and I think you will do alright... My only word of caution, or plea, is to keep it as original as possible. That's a rare bird you are working with. It pained me to do so, but I kept my "**** Red" interior in my truck rather than swapping in the black I have just to keep it original.

The only thing I'm changing on it are the mirrors to the 2nd gen ones. Then a bunch of cleaning.
I'm also putting it back to stock height and some 235 75 r15 tires on these OEM rims. But other than that, she's staying very stock. Lol. I have my lifted XJ and racejeep to mod.

I know you mentioned having something that gets better mileage... I average about 30 MPG with letting it idle for 2-5 minutes every time I start it up before I take off. With the 23 gallon fuel tank, the trip range is 600 miles per tank.
