OK, so I lied. I got off work early and I started working on it again. I pulled out the plastic inner wheel well inserts. Then I cut off the front of the fender to make it even with the top of the bumper. Here's some pictures. Before insert removeal and cutting. Then after the cut and finally after the edge was folded under.

Well, the build is now officially off and running, thanks to motogpman2006. I just bought his 95 green 4d XJ. I figured I'd post the build up in the correct section. Here she is with a 3" Rough Country lift and not much else.
As a former US Navy sailor, now disabled vet, I must agree with many posts I have seen here, that what you are doing is a GREAT thing. Not only will it benefit your son as a surprise, but I believe it will strengthen the bond between father and son.

Again, IT IS A GREAT THING YOU ARE DOING!

Thanks guys for all the kind words. It's not a suprise thou. We Email back and forth and he's paying for it all out of his deployment pay. We E-mail pictures of other peoples XJ's for ideas and pick out parts and he transferes the money. Then order the parts. I just twist the wrenches. It's great and makes me feel almost like he's home and we're doing it together. I send him pictures of everything. It's great to hear how excited he is when he sees the pictures.

I installed a new transmission mount and the TNT-Treks skid plate today. As you can see by the side by side photo with the old crossmember the new one is Superman in comparison.

I decided to try mounting the 33" tires from my TJ on the XJ after cutting the fenders to see how they would fit. I was actually suprised that they fit pretty good in the front and back, until I turned the front wheels all the way. As you can see in the photo with the wheel turned to the left, the rear of the tire is very close to the rear fenderwell. I think we'll have to go smaller.

Would it be possible for you to take more fender off where the tire is in contact? I have a 4.5 in lift on my xj and I have 33's. I havent done any trimming yet but the tires contact the same point, like in your pic, when the wheels are turned hard. Best of luck, I'll be checkin back to see how it's going.
