Default Hello again!

Hey guys,

Sorry for the delay in posting again. Spring Break here at the Resort which equals 80+ hour weeks. Not to mention my lovely 107 pages of tax docs I just finally finished up. Half a tree later, I'm free from them and the spring rush ends in 6 days... (wahoo!)

So, I almost sold the Jeep. Almost. And I feel terribly guilty about the whole thing. I thought my taxes would rape me this year, but my CPA is freaking superman, so I didn't end up needing to grease my finances by selling her. I listed it for $1,000 more than I paid and was inundated with offers. Needless to say, I was like "what the freaking heck am I doing? You are an idiot."

So, here we are again. Back to the plan.

I've made decisions about the lift size and brand.

I have 3 questions for you experts here that I would love some feedback on:

1) Since I'm going 3" and 31s, they won't look super aggressive like 33's would. I would really like to put 31x11.5 on. This will make the Jeep stance wider and also help in the sand (the skinny tires I have now are like knives... very effective as you may imagine)

Q: Are there any drawbacks with 31x11.5? I know it may increase my need to cut fenders off because it's so wide. Other than that?

2) I have the late NP242 as you know. I've read and read and this is the t-case with the least support and discussion. My reading says the late 242 are best out of 242's because you don't need a new output housing and seals. You can simply cut the shaft and bolt the output flange on like a conventional 231 HnT.

Q: Has anyone here done this successfully with a 96+ 242? I would LOVE to know your experience.

3) When I called Tattons to order my new front DS, I asked about his SYE options for the 242, and he indicated he doesn't like HnT methods, so he uses an alternative style that 'extends the slip'? Maybe? I can't really remember what he said, and I certainly didn't understand it.

My reading has led me to believe he may have been referring to what is called a "yoke-style SYE". Maybe? Can't find hardly any info or pictures on this.

Q: Does anyone have any idea what on earth he's talking about? If so, any opinions? I would imagine Tatton wouldn't sell a crap product...

Thanks in advance for your help on this, and thanks again to all the support so far!

This appears to be the yolk-style SYE Tatton was talking about.

I've seen a custom version of this where a guy sliced the U-joint shorter, ground 1/4" splines out, and sleeved it over his entire output. He then tapped and bolted it on.

It looks like Tatton just recreated the slip yoke. Not eliminated it. But I'm pretty new to this arena; I'm trying to visualize how this particular set-up is a solution. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I can't see how this would solve the issues at hand.

Can anyone tell me how this is supposed to work? Or have any experience with it? Looks like tattons sold ~65 of these, so someone should know....

Use 1"-1.5" spacers for that wider stance look and to make sure your tires don't rub if you go with 11.5". I attached a picture of mine with 3" and 31x10.5" with 1.5" spacers

This is after i pulled fenders off (and banged my fenders while wheeling) you can see how much the 10.5"s stick out

I would honestly look at Adams Driveshaft website and buy a D/S and SYE all in 1. Also I would still strongly recommend going to JY and grabbing a 231NP (and axles but whatevs)

Thanks for the reply baconator.

The pictures are helpful. Google is full of them, but it's not always easy to tell if the search is yielding accurate results, so then you have to dig through the threads to make sure the picture correlates with the specs you wanted to view.

It's good to see what it would look like with the stance.

Spacers are illegal in Utah, thought I'd imagine they are hard to notice unless someone were looking. I'll have to consider that.

As far as Adams Driveshafts, his site isn't yielding any results for me and my NP242. I had considered swapping it with a 231, but the work involved (and risk with buying a JY T-case) pushed me away. I'm gonna stick with my T-case (I know it's in great shape) and try to figure out the SYE or HnT.

Maybe I'll just bite the bullet with Tatton and return-and-report for any other poor soul with my T-case that's looking for answers!
