Default Adding 97-01 Liftgate on 84-96 Jeep Cherokees

Has anyone added the 97-01 Liftgate on a 84-96 Jeep Cherokee? I was at the JY messing with some of the newer Cherokees such as a 2001 and liked how it could open by it self "Like mine Does" but also closes by it self. Also have more options with the 97-01 taillights to pick from.

One thing I noticed was the top hinges were on the inside on the 97-01 where the 84-96 are on the outside. Witch don't matter to me as I can fix that.

I already accomplished seeing if a 97-01 Front Header Panel would work and it fits on fine. The only hard part was finding my right paint color as its hard to find.

Body lines don't exactly match but the newer ones are actually metal not fiberglass so they dent not bust. Rather happy about that fact. The rear glass doesn't tend to fall out when flexing with the newer ones either.

I don't know yet. I'll be going to the JY this weekend for find out.

I know the 97-01 taillights will fit on the 84-96 Cherokees but the tailgate will not close properly.
If I remember the older taillight boxy ones are 11-1/2 and the newer round is 12-1/2

well it would if you cut the back off a 97+ and welded it on. thats would be about the only way and isnt really worth it. and trust me i would do it if possible. my 92 is has like 65% of an 01 on it

Are you talking about where the hinges go on the back? on mine the hinges are on the top of the roof, as the 01 are located on the inside. I was going to go with adding the hings on top like how mine is now. Also I can't remember but is the handle on the liftgate that holds the door closed the same style *** in the middle or is it a difftrent hook?

its a completely different shape. I was talking about cutting everything behind the window and swapping it to make it work

Has anyone ever cutted away the small 1" above the box style tail lights for the 01 taillights to fit?

Heres my new image of my back with the new added 01 corner bumbers on it. I think it looks nice since I got the bumber painted red.

that might work but then you wouldnt have that body line were the door 90's and the tail lights would round might look funny imo
