Braved the cold and snowy weather today and finally pulled an 8.8!! Pulled it out of a 2000 Explorer, 3.73 LSD in great shape and for a total cost of $60 ditched the calipers and rotors as i plan to use the calipers and rotors from the zj for the swap, now i need to cut off the old brackets and clean it up and order the 8.8 swap kit from IRO

how can you tell from the tag what the gear ratio is? or, perhaps a better question is how do you decipher the numbers?

It should have the ratio stamped clearly on it, or at least the ones I've seen have. I'll grab a pic of my Dana 30 tag tomorrow. There's also a chance someone could have discarded the tag when changing the gear oil.

as far as the 8.8 goes, you can decode the tag on the door jamb. and if your looking for a LSD axle you want to check the sticker as well, the axle code your looking for is D4 on most of them.

Started cleaning up the 8.8 today since we finally have some nice weather! Decided to go the sawzall route for cutting off the brackets, went to the hardware store and bought 4 6" metal cutting blades and surprisingly i only used 1 to cut everything off . . was also going to pick up a new grinding blade for my angle grinder but unfortunately they didnt have any so hopefully tomorrow i can find one and finish cleaning it up!
Here's some pics
Porter Cable FTW
1 blade literally cut everything like butter even most of the welds!
Just needs a light grinding to clean up the welds and then ill hit with a flap disk and make it pretty
Looks like ill need to replace the ebrakes
Drained the fluid which came out very clean
Took a look at everything inside and its all in great shape with very minimal wear on ring, pinion and spider gears
