Blacksburg, VA (October 2, 2009)... Forest Service road crews are working to finish repairs to the Patterson Creek Road (Forest Service Road 184) in Craig and Botetourt Counties in time for most of the fall hunting season. Crews are using heavy equipment to repair/replace culverts, reestablish drainage ditches, reconstruct hardened road base, and fill the largest mud holes. The road was closed in the spring due to extensive damage created by illegal off-road vehicle use that resulted in citations being issued to 39 individuals.
“The repairs are going well,” reports Eastern Divide District Ranger Cynthia Schiffer. “Although progress has been impacted by vandalism and thunderstorms, we will have the road opened by October 16th.”
Equipment on site has been damaged by vandals twice. Anyone with information about this vandalism is encouraged to contact the Forest Service at 1-866-241-6669.
Southwestern Virginia Four Wheelers assisted the Forest Service with the repair work. The club acquired a grant from United Land Action Fund to help cover the cost of stone, arranged for donated lime from Titan America (Roanoke Cement) and had individual club members donate straw for erosion control. Martin Morrison, Club President, said “The club would like to thank all of the companies and individuals for their donations. As a club, we are proud to assist the Forest Service in promoting responsible use of our public lands.”

There are a lot of clubs that do this kind of thing. I know Tidewater4wheelrs does quite a fedw things as far as shoe creek. KMA does a bunch of stuff with the beaches down in Coralla. Basically join a club and you will find this stuff out.

Check out the Crab Tree Falls area off of 29 between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. There's a section commonly called shoe creek. Pretty basic trails but still a good time. You can camp right off the trails. Has a very nice rock garden area for flexing and "slick rock" - lots of Youtube's on slick rock. It's a good spot is you're not looking for anything major.

Some of the guys around here run Shoe creek and Stoney Run. From what I understand it takes ALL day to do and with many hangups and other problems, you finish the run in the dark. I should have my new lift on by spring and gonna give them a shot.
shoe creek didn't seem to bad if it wasn't for the ice that what the guys told me that made it to the other side but trailered rigs will be a little harder to work with cause you go in near buenvista and come out in lynchburg
If you stick around the Crabtree Falls area of Shoe Creek you can hit about 3 different trails, the rock garden and a couple other obstacles in a single day. My buddy and I did the entire Crabtree area in about 6 hours. It's a good spot for newbies, stockers, and anyone not wanting anything major. I ran it all when mine was stock and only had some hangups in the rock garden and slick rock. I've directions to that trail head if anyone wants them.
belive it or not its a 10 minute jaunt and im at the trail head for stoney run, (AKA big levels, aka Bald mtn) I know of maybe 100+ places to go with in 50 miles of my house, but never really have time anymore to check em out.
