Tidewater/Hampton Cherokees????
Well guys the J10 I bought will be turned into a truggy
.. deal on YJ fell through.. so now time to build a low buck beater truggy.
PLans are to narrow front and rear. Spring over front, boatsides, Interal, maybe external cage
. Plus a bob on the rear. The rear will be just skins as floor of bed is rusted out, and no need in keeping it. All chrome will be kept, and repolished
Goal will be a 105-107" wb on 36's 0r 37's.
More to come on when this will happen.

Ya, I know. I could swing the 4.5 inch lift but I don't think I would feel comfortable laying out the cash for the long arms yet since I have never even been 4 wheelin.
My main concerns with bigger lifts are fuel mileage, on road handling/vibration and the install itself. Even though I have no idea what I am doing, pride and cheapness will prevent me from paying to have this done professionally.
RC lists the time as almost double to install the 4.5 as opposed to the 3 so I am guessing it is more difficult.
I am used to dealing with motorcycles. Learning to do all my own maintanance and repairs was a small source of pride but also came in handy on the road. Since right now I have another vehicle and can afford to have it down for awhile I'd like to take the same approach. Problem is the Jeep won't fit in the garage like my bikes, so that is another reason why I am leaning towards a 3".
But ya, I secretly want the 4.5

Sounds like a plan!

The next step up is $830 and I could swing it if it was really worth it.
RE? Is that Rubicon Express? Quick search and it seemed to be a good bit more expensive.
If you all have suggestions could you post a link to the exact kit? I think $850 would be the top of my budget unless there is a really convincing argument to go higher.
The $450 kits would be better for my budget but I don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish.
BTW, thanks for all the help and responses.
I know you dont know me, but do yourself a favor and stay away from RC stuff. Thier coils and leafs ride rough. I can give you names and numbers to ppl I did installs for, and how unhappy they were with the ridequality after.
My only gripe with Rusty's is shipping is high, and used to be slow as hell. COils are also soft, but that can be a good thing.
ALso do yourself a favor and buy used parts and then recondition them. Bushings are cheap. Most used lifts get 50-60% retail price, and beside few scratches, and bushing beeing worn (sometimes) you get a good deal.
Lastly look at drop brackets or long arms if this is your DD. the ride difference is huge. Next tiume you see a lifted rig look at the control arm angles, then look at them for a longarm/db rig. remember your suspension travels in an arc...

With that budget, a LA kit is pretty inaccessible unless you can find a really good price on a used kit. So we're probably looking at short arms (which can be upgraded to LA's as Red82 said), so...
Nothing against Red82's lift (or anybody with an RC lift), but I would have RC as my last choice. I've seen them on the trails and they do fine. But, the springs are really stiff which means the ride is rough and the flex isn't as good. They're quality isn't bad, but when it comes to lifts, you really do get what you pay for, so take that into consideration. Like Red82 said, if you do get a RC lift, talk to Grimmus on here.
Rusty's is a step up in quality, ride, and price. I've got their 3" kit and have added MJ shackles and coil spacers to get me to about 4.25 all around. The one complaint I have with my lift is the shocks, but I've also abused them, so it's unfair to say they're a low quality. The regular coils are soft, too soft for me, so I went with their HD coils and they ride pretty well. They've held up to the weight of my bumper and winch without any issues and they flex well too. AS far as shipping, they will work with you, but not much. haggle with them a little and get shipping quotes from other companies like RC and SeriousOffroad to be able to counter Rusty's shipping cost. They wanted almost $200 to ship my 3" and I talked them down to $140 (which is still too high IMO). Their customer service is really good and is willing to work with people, so let them know where you're at.
If you're looking at 3", here's a link
And here's the 4.5" link
That's pretty much what you're gonna be able to to do with an $850 budget. If you can go more, talk to Frank (SeriousOffroad) about an RE set up. Here's his link.

have to get all the parts gathered together to keep it a roller, as the build happenss. Once it starts it should go fast. Once all the parts are gathered should have about 1500 with purchase price in it. I figure roughly 100 hrs worth of work though.
There is a 5.5 inch LA kit on Craigslist, brand new.
I could swing this if LA's really mean that much but googling it,
It got mixed reviews.

I know the guy selling it. It's brand new. He goes through jeeps like crazy. Had a little trouble with his XJ and decided to sell it. IRO isn't the best long arm set up but I don't think it's three worst either.
Any concerns going to 5.5? Could I still use my 30's untill they wear out?
I have read about death wobble and vibration issues. Is 5.5 overkill and going to cause other problems? Would I do better with a better quality 4.5 even though it would have to be short arms?

Anything over 3" is going to require an SYE or at the very least a t-case drop to take care of vibes. An adjustable track bar is also needed, but death wobble can have many sources, not just a lift. Nothing wrong with 5.5". The 30's will look pretty funky, but that can be fixed later. X2 on IRO not beig the best, but also not being the worst.

Death wobble is separate from vibrations from the the drive line angles that is caused by the lift. I don't think 5.5" is over kill. I used to think I would never go higher than 4.5 but I think one day I May go 6.5. But I'm in absolutely no rush for that.
Anybody want to do a meet/greet this coming weekend? Red tried getting an events thread going but no one jumped on it, so I'll throw it out on here.
