Update: Found the new TPS I put in had somehow broken the plug off the body. So I returned it for a new one only to get the new one plugged in and in an attempt to unplug it again after the test drive, breaking the second one the same way with barely enough force to bend a blade of grass. Then I vented fuel pressure to check the pump was able to build it back up, rinsed the motor off and now it will not shift unless you absolutely romp on the throttle. Anyone up for a bonfire? I'll still take the pump out and the guys at advance next to the shop said they'll swap my airtex pump for a Bosch pump if I pay the difference which is about 20 bucks. But I'm too frustrated to touch the thing after all this nonsense. So it will wait until later this week on my next day off.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only thing tell you're trans when to downshift is your detent cable? That may not be true with aw4s though

You can set the cable so it will down shift correctly also check your fluid level

It also soars to over 2k rpms on startup before dropping to 1k until I drop it in drive. This is after getting up to operating temperature and after I rinsed the motor off. It sounds right about the cable Ben but the rpms just climb and climb with no power being added but its still in gear. That is of course until I get in the throttle then it kicks down and takes off.

I've done the cable adjustment before but now its like it just forgot how to shift until you romp on it. But once you let off the throttle and try to ease back into it, there is no power just revving like its in neutral.

I hope its not but I'd love a reason to do a manual swap myself. It only did after I rinsed the motor which leads me to believe its computer related. I just want it back on the road because its my dd and my granddad won't let me keep his truck forever.

I can't get rid of it but all these problems are killing me. This motor swap turned into a nightmare overnight. More testing to come and I'll post more results.

Where are you located at bud? I've got a tranny computer from my 90 you can have, I'm fairly sure yours still had the tcm and pcm as two seoerate units

I'm by Walrond park off plantation at exit 146 on I-81. I'll check to make sure they are two separate units and if that's the case I'd be forever grateful. I need to get a new TPS once the advance at the shop gets a new one. And then I'll swap the pump out next check for a Bosch. Fingers crossed something in that time period decides to cooperate.

They are two separate units. The tranny ecu is behind the knee panel below the glove box. Easy to swap but you do have to drop the whole panel from drivers side to pass side to get to it.

I hope that's the remedy for that. Just don't understand how it went out just after rinsing the motor. After the TPS broke and it was idling high in the garage after that last test drive every time I'd bump the throttle in park it would backfire out of the intake rather than the exhaust like it had been.

Thats not the tranny ecu doing that. Have you checked your map sensor. Also, TPS's do not like getting a bath either. are you sure you have the TPS adjusted right? Do you have the RENIX fuel injection manual? I can e-mail it to you but it will be later today. I'm heading out the door right now. PM me your e-mail address if you need the manual.
