just unbolt everything from the axle, and let it droop as far as it can, while you jack the body up. you'll be able to slide the springs right out. i personally dont like to use spring compressors.

its much safer/easier, to just unbolt and drop the axle. does your husband know how to do this?

Disconnect the swaybar links and bottom of shocks and let the axle drop down.Next, take a floor jack and jack up one side of the axle to bring the other side down further and slide the spring out.Same for other side.
