I'll probably end up with 265/70/r17 or 255/75R17 tires.

Certainly can't be any worse then 3.55's with 31's.

so far I'm actually pretty happy with the 33s and 3.55s. most of my driving is 40+ mph and I'm cruising along at 1500-2000 RPM. off-road in 4x4 low, it crawls up the rocks pretty darn good.

I think when (and if, which hopefully I will) do the 5 speed swap I won't really need to regear at all.

i think the problem you're having is that you bought a vehicle that is no less than 12 years old, beat on it, and now it doesn't work. don't worry, it's a common problem.

i'd suggest the following courses of action:

1) post up exactly what's wrong with your jeep over in OEM cherokee tech and be prepared to be ignored anyways.

2) buy a 4x4 no more than 5 years old to beat on and have less stuff break

3) take it to a guy that makes cars work again. i know of a good one in laurel, md.

4) post up a picture of your jeep and maybe one of the gurus around here will help you if they're bored.

here's my racing inspired u-joints. they left off some material and needle bearings to reduce weight, think that's why she goes so fast
