300 are super low gear ratio, definitely a bonis over the 231, plus dana 300 is all gear driven, which is heavy duty, and no flimsy chains or belts. But weigh nearly as much as a 4 speed tranny lol. Hell u wouldn't want to scrap the 4.0 for a 5.0 or 5.7? It still be all jeep, just awesome, but its would unfortunately be a carb.

U could also go dana 20, but its not really got a good low ratio for it. Only thing u gain is gear driven assembly and cheaper than a dana 300. Im sure u can adapt it too. But dana 300 is an upgrade in everyway but weight, plus it already has a sye.

How easy are they to get? And how hard is the swap?

Clist check em out. Not terribly bad, they were in all jeeps till jeep got rid of the 4.2L which was 87ish. No idea how bad the swap would be, all that holds one in is 3 holes on the crossmember, two about 2" from each other, the other is 3" and offset. I had to redrill all mine on my crossmember cause they were off. U would need the torque plate that mounts between the tcase and crossmember. Prob find a write up somewhere. Np231 is a good tcase but chain versus gears, there is a reason a rear end is not a chain and sprocket like a bike.

Ok found the info, u can double your tcase by simply just adding the dana 300 to it, so u would get double the low and have a sye but extending the drivetrain. Also the dana 300 had a ridiculously low 4:1 gear ratio where the np 231 had 2.67:1 and the dana 20 in jeeps had 2.02:1. There are ways to double tcases is one is gear driven and the other chain or belt. Dana 20 are strong but u are losing ratio. I have an 81 cj and a dana 300 was swapped out for the dana 20, which makes me kinda mad. But the best of the best tcase is the dana 300, strongest and the performance to boot. Only tranny to bolt directly is the 4 speed jeep tranny which i heard was crap, but had a granny. The 3 speed was much stronger that bolted to dana 20. They make adapters for dana 300 to aw4.
