So I'm thinking of buying a radar detector just to keep me alert on my speed and whatnot. I really can't speed a lot due to it being a lifted Jeep, but something just to keep me alert would be fine.

From what I've gathered, detectors are only illegal in Illinois when used by commercial vehicles. Will I have no issue having this thing above my dash? Do cops generally go after people with them for whatever reason? I'm a good driver, I've only gotten one speeding ticket and I've been driving since 09, but I just want something to keep an eye out. Since God forbid I'm going like 10 over, and a cop wants a reason to check and make sure my Jeep is all legal.

I'm lookin to pick up a radar detector too I'm doing a lot of highway driving to work now and I like to cruise at about 75

 

That is junk. It's worse than going without, because you think it will help when it won't. Besides that, you'll no longer listen to it due to all the false alerts you'll receive. You'll have to plan on spending well over $100 to get something decent.
I use a low end Escort detector, 8500.
