It's not that they can't be used. I would venture to say these straps fail about the same as others, percentage wise. Thousands of pulls are made daily using straps, most probably with metal hooks. This was an accident. Same stuff with winches, **** happens.. Not everyone uses a weighted blanket or whatnot. Just sucks. Period

you cant yank on metal, which is probably what happened here. you need to tension it first, then pull. full straps are meant to give, creating a "rubberband" type effect.

This is why I don't use them or own any. It's sad this guy is another example.

if your strap has metal hooks, get rid of them now. they have no place in our sport, period. it's just not worth the risk.

straps with metal hooks are not the only concern, it's also booty fab recovery points.

if this isn't enough to scare some sense into you, maybe a mishap closer to home will do the trick.

this guy was probably just not properly educated using such straps, (may he rest in peace), but there's no excuse with anyone on this board.

i dont use metal hooks with tow strap simply for this reason. i use a recovery tow strap that is rated for 30,000 lbs by 3" use a shackle to lock the strap in place. i also use a winch if needed.
