San Antonio XJ's
Guys, need some help/advice here. Maybe should start a new post but will start here.
Been having some overheating problems the last 2-3 weeks. So started digging around. (my mechanical expertise is limited) Found the radiator fan was bad and one of the coolant temp. sensors was shot, replaced both of those and it seemed to be running better.
Took a look around on some forums and decided to flush the coolant system as well. So i flushed the system and expansion tank for awhile (quite a bit of brown substance came out) then got some coolant cleaner and was planning on running it with water for a day or two then flushing it again and adding proper coolant. All was going well, went to get some gas and on the way back i noticed some steam so stopped and shut it off. It blew a excessive amount of fluid/steam.
Looking back i had everything in the coolant system top full, is this the reason for the blowout or..... is my overheating problem still going strong?
Hope this make sense, just looking for some input before i give in and take it to a mechanic.

Have you replaced the thermostat? Also check for any tiny holes and leaks. Any cracks where coolant could be leaking from. If all of that is still good, start the motor and squeeze the coolant hoses. Try and feel the coolant running through the hose. If you cant feel it flowing then maybe your water pump went out. Just some things to try and look for.
Edit: after rereading your first post, you didn't top off your reservoir did you?

Pressure test the system, 15psi should uncover any leaks in the system, if it holds pressure start looking at flow. Thermostat, water pump, clogged radiator.

That may have been it then. If you topped off everything completely the system may have been too full. There should be a fill line on the reservoir. I'm not positive on where exactly it is. I have the older closed system. But try checking the levels and fill it to the fill lines. There should be a full line for cold(engine cold) and a full line for hot(engine warmed up to operating temp). Then give her a shot and drive it around for a bit.

Okay, i just went and checked and about halfway down the reservoir is a "Full" line. Should of noticed that earlier, hopefully that is the problem.
