Well I'm glad I towed the XJ today. I ended up getting stuck and thought I may have gotten some water in the engine but I didn't. I see a major flaw with the XJ. The air box easily sucks small amounts of water up when you splash trough a hole. Going to buy a snorkel. There was tons of water in the front differential and my passenger kinked my winch cable. So there are a few fixes. Poor XJ is parked in the garage draining all the fluid out. I'll have up and going in a week.

Sorry no pics.

So all the snorkels I've seen tie back into the stock air box. Does it some how seal up the stock air opening to keep water out. Any suggestions on brands?

I don't have a snorkel on mine, but i have a flexi hose from oreily running my filter up to the fire wall.and a cone filter sitting on top of the rear of my valve cover pinched between the firewall and trans dipstick.
I went though some deep water holes out there. Thought I should have an air boat instead of a 6" lifted jeep on 33 swamper boggers.

Homebrew cowl snorkels can incorporate stock air box and filter if you seal it all up properly. Check mine out for ideas

It was prolly about 30 bucks. Just get a 3-3.5" flex hose, plastic weld, sillicone, and small piece of plastic or wood to cover the front of your air box.
1. Disconnect hoses from box
2. Take air filter and box out.
3. Seal opening in front with wood or plastic
4. Silicone all openings
5. Cut a round hole in the back to fit the flex hose, seal with silicone
6. Put box back in and line up the hose to you firewall, draw a circle and cut it open ( make sure its under the open vents of your cowl)
7. Seal hose to firewall hole. Put plastic weld all around for a good seal here.
8. Connect it all up.

*I used two 90 degree 3"pvc joints that come from the back of my box. Flex hose will work the same if you get the right length

got water? lol, man i see same thing happened to you that happened to me the other day? finally got bedliner on the inside of mine should be ready for the next flood, lol. let me know when you are gonna do a snorkel, i'd like to see what you end up doing cause i've been thinking the same thing. I have a few ideas of making one outta pvc in a similar style to how they make those kits.

I hit a hole that wasn't too deep by the old stick test but it had a very soft bottom. I barely got any water inside the cab and none in the motor, but i flooded the diff. Now I trying to replace the Dana 30 axle seals but I didn't know they are located up next the pumpkin. All chevys have it out by the hub for easy replacement. Not sure how I plan on doing the snorkel, I've seen some on Ebay for like 170.00.

This one is even cheaper:

Let me see what yall think, if my inner axle seals aren't leaking oil out, but let water in are they functioning properly?

all seals will let some fluid through (depending on the pressure). being in 2-3ft of water definitely exerts more pressure on the seals than a couple of inches of dif lube. also water is less viscous than the diff fluid (which means it can't penetrate the seals as easily). i dont know however if a quart is normal, i guess it depends on how long it was sitting there.

Default water in the diffs

so i finally got to draining the diffs after my maiden voyage

front was ok (only a little extra fluid came out over the fill plug), but the rear one looked almost like mud! drove home all the way home with that crap!

Default bedlined interior!!

on the plus side, got the bedliner on the inside now

now to drain the transfer case fluid, replace the winch motor (found a replacement on ebay for $85....should be on the way tomorrow), and find out why the airbag light is on
