How long ago? You might have a clogged radiator too.
What exactly happened to cause the overheat? Will it overheat just sitting at idle? Does it happen while driving? Both? How hot did the motor get? Does it creep up to being too hot, or does it get there really fast? All these different things will help narrow down the problem.

I was able to check the tstat this morning and it looks like it is stuck closed so hopefully a new one will stop the overheating and get the coolant flowing again!

Did you confirm that? Its easy to tell... put it in a pot of boiling water. They open pretty slowly, but you'll definietly know it opens if you dip it in the water for a while, and pull it back out. Hopefully that's your problem... it certainly makes sense.
5 bucks at a parts store beats a new motor
