Agreed that with some tread on the tires and a working front locker, we could have probably gotten Tom's rig up the rest of the obstacles unassisted. He MAY have been able to do them anyway with some more rocks and more of the skinny pedal - but I think he was wise to stop pushing it at the point he did. Sometimes taking the line is much preferred to broken parts.

I should be able to post some vids pretty soon. After editing out all the dead space I could, we have a pretty solid hour and a half of footage. I have a DVD burned, but it is not finalized. Plus the DVD drive on my computer is on shrooms or something, so I can't do it here right now. As usual, video does no justice to the size of the obstacles. Plus I was standing right in the way of the camera on No Right Turn when Sean was coming down...sorry, Sean
Oooh can't wait for your videos

so I came across this steering kit from frank z, I know gorillaxj was looking for something like this not sure if it will work with a 44 but it is a good deal. I think I might just try it out.

the thing i don't like about that is it's still an inverted Y setup, so you still have the non responsive sloppy steering like from the factory.

now don't get me wrong its a stout setup, just doesn't eliminate all the jeep steering problems, it just gets rid of one, weakness.

thats basically the same steering setup im running but i built mine from the ballistic fab kit, it works, but you gotta have polly spacers under the tre's to get rid of the dead spot from the tie rod twisting, oh and i bent the tre that the drag link hooks to in moab

Its the inverted T, it doesn't change toe as you articulate like the inverted Y, stock steering will toe out as the front axle moves up, and toe in as it moves down, also a ig factor to death wobble as if one joint gets loose it constantly changes the angles...

it is a better setup. but I would swap the WJ (i think thats the right one if not the ZJ?) pass knuckle to do the cross over steering on the D30. but that wouldn't be horrible. I would agree to use the poly spacers to make it tolerable, it made a big difference for me. here is a pic if you havent seen or heard of this... thread about it http://www.jeepforum.com

the inverted T is what I have now. I am building a cross over steering setup for my D44 with flat tops off a chevy, and eventually will go hy-steer when my tie rod seizes or bends lol. I am a bit more worried about armor then steering after function

that's what i meant i must have hit Y instead of T. guess it's time to start proof reading again ha ha

and i wasn't meaning about the toe in or out stuff, whe you do crossover you'll see the difference. the inverted T or Y is just a sloppy design weather its a factory setup or aftermarket. the steering is about half as responsive as it can be. but there's no good way to fix that. plus almost everyone i know that runs that style setup goes through the draglink end
once a yr it seems like.

all i'm really saying is if i was gonna spend that kinda money on steering i'd 100% upgrade it instead of 50% but thats just me.

i'd definitely go with that WJ(i think it is also) knuckle and run a crossover setup. get some 1.25 x.281 wall dom and sleeve it and you'd neve have to worry about it, plus the steering is 10x times more responsive.

lol, i figured that's what you meant, I HATE the Y steering its a horrible design in my opinion but works i guess. the T is better but kinda a lot of $$ for little gain IMO, but it gets expensive quick lol... I hope so, Its a bit sketchy to drive above 40 mph lol, its just slop then turn and slop after...

Take it from me, I was running that exact setup up until a month ago. Steering never felt tight, and it was all over the road with the hydro assist. I took the drag link all the way to the knuckle and it's drives like a whole different Jeep. Not sure why, but it got rid of the twitchiness on the road too. Drives like a dream compared to before. And I am into my new steering with 1-1/4 .281 wall and 7/8 heims less than 200 easily. You could do it even cheaper with 3/4" Heims. Dont get me wrong, it is a nice upgrade from the stock stuff, I ran it for over a year. It just feels and works better the way it is now.

before...

AFTER..

Locker parts arrived Monday, installed correctly today, just as I expected my impatience led to my breaking one of the active spacers during my initial install. Looks like I'm a definite go for Saturday, I need to wheel! My tagalong to Moab made me hungry to run.
