Found out the gear selector switch went out on the Cherokee. And it's like $180 for the part. Damn my luck

Mine was acting up a nd with the research i did i found out that the cps and cam pos sensor are on the same 5 amp loop. The down side was its impossible to find just the sensor local. But a reman distributor was like $50 with a $45 core. Have you pulled codes?

No check engine light except when it wont start, but that's normal. CEL is always on when the ignition is on and the engine is not running

I have not pulled codes, This one is a 94 so is it just OBD1? Can I rent a code reader from Auto zone or something? My reader is an OBD2 only reader so I have never messed with OBD1. Although im sure codes would help. I've read a post about the codes corresponding to a blinking check engine light after 3 key on/offs but I have never been able to get that to work. I haven't tried it on this jeep so I'll give it a try.

All the codes will be 2 digit.
The first one will ways be 12 and the last will always be 55.

12 is the battery has been disconnected within last 50 cycles or something like that.
55 is end of codes

Mine was acting similar. Ended up mainly being the dist was bad. Try pulling the cap and rotor and cleaning the stator. Pull the metal lobe and use emery cloth to clean it up. Might only be a temp fix but will isolate the prob to the cam sensor

Installed JCR steering box spacer and MORE steering brace today. Still need to run my hand throttle. Thanks Frank!

Also want to make a cowl scoop. Ol heep isn't getting enough air with the spectre, especially when the defrost is on. Recommendations on material? Just sheet metal, or do I need more hoss metal.

BOOM, Altough I saw your post after I found this, I still give you credit because it would have got me there. I was trying to see if I had spark at the plugs and distributor, I pulled this off(the wire going into the distributor, not from the distributor to the plugs) and decided to swap it with the one on my other jeep. She fired RIGHT up, and purrs like a kitten. It always seemed liked it was missing spark on a cylinder somewhere, and this has got to be it!

Thanks for the help Serious Offroad, Big Purp, and Crazy Monkey Ben
