Very easy to fix. When doing a tune up with new plugs, cap etc it takes maybe 30 min to do on an xj including going and buying the parts.

Is it normal for the steering wheel to be 90 plus degrees off when the wheels are straight after lifting and before alignment?

Align your tires and adjust the drag link. You will be good to go then

Adjust your tie rod to get your tires straight. Then your drag link. For the steering wheel/box. Drive around some see if it pulls left or right and go from there. You can do a self alignment in about 10min

Sounds a little risky. I don't wanna find out my tires are wearing after thousands of miles of misalignment

I NEVER get alignments. I do all my own with a tape measure.

First time you touch dirt, ur alignment's off again anyways.

Meh, I was worried too, I did mine myself after my lift and was going to take it to a shop to have them do it "professionally" later. After several thousand miles of perfectly straight driving, I'm not worried about it anymore. Just make sure you have a pipe wrench or some really good vice grips or something to break the tie rod loose, it was a ***** until I went and bought a pipe wrench.
