The 96+ axles had the bigger ujoints, not more splines. So if you pick up a set of spare axles, stick to the 96 and up.

The axle shafts I have pictured that I am putting in my Cheap Super D30 are out of a 95 XJ that came with ABS, so they have the bigger 297 knuckle U-joints. I've had them in my 91 XJ for a couple years now and they have never given me any grief. I recently started hearing clicks and such when doing hard obtacles with the front wheels turned. I totally chalk all of that noise up to the TRASHED regular "low end" Duralast knuckle joints I had put in the axles when I got them used 2 years ago at the Puyallup 4x4 swap meet..

I've decided to stay with the OEM knuckles and front single piston disc brakes. I'm wanting to keep this build functional but on the cheap. Every scrap yard around here wants a small fortune for anything you take off of a WJ. I will keep my eye out for WJs being parted out as I want to upgrade to the WJ knuckles, dual piston discs, tierod and draglink, eventually. I already have upgraded to a ZJ tierod and it has served me well. After Taco-ing my second OEM XJ tierod I bought my ZJ tierod the same time I bought my 95 ABS D30 axle shafts. Lots of hard wheeling later its still taking the lickings and hasn't bent a bit. I still find it dumb to remove anything that has been working fine for me and replace it with something stronger.

What I am interested in getting from a WJ is:

1.) Steering Knuckles
2.) Dual Piston Disc Brake Calipers
3.) Brake Rotors
4.) Tie Rod
5.) Drag Link
6.) Master Cylinder

Yeah thats basically the true cross over kit with the dual piston calipers, I'm going to do the same thing, I'll get a couple sets when I go...hopefully they have a couple because it's random on what they have on the yard

Last night I pulled the old D30 axle out of the front of my Jeep. It's a good thing it didn't take long cause I finished just as dinner got ready and it started sleeting then snowing after dinner. Here are a couple pics of the old axle laying on the garage floor.

I removed the diff cover and let the gear oild drain out overnight. I wanted to give it plenty of drain time as I will be removing the ring and pinion gears tonight so I can install them in the new housing. These 4.56 gears were just replaced in the old housing last spring and my Aussie Locker has been strong through much abuse for a couple of years now. I also removed and cleaned up my hockey puck bumpstops for installation on the new axle housing.

You can see the open space where the right side LCA mount used to be on the old axle housing. Ouch!!

I want to to this exact same thing to my Dana 30 and then put a truss on it. Fortunately (or unfortunately since it was a nice ride) I have a 2000 WJ with a blown up motor sitting in my driveway. I also want to swap out my stock XJ beat up leather powered seats with the nice heated leather power seats from my WJ.

Hey that heated power seat swap sounds like a great idea to me, too. My driver's seat is thrashed.
