New purchase
Hey Guys,
I am looking to buy a Cherokee, mainly for driving day to day but want something that will get me into the woods well and haul some of my camping and fishing gear. My brother owned a 1993 and loved it. I was looking at the 97s what do you guys recommend as the best overall year for engines, transmissions, and overall less headaches? Thanks in advance.

only owning one myself (2001) I'm a little biased, but I would suggest at 97 - 01 XJ, depending on how well taken care of they are. definitely want the 4.0 liter and if you can help it the Chrysler 8.25 rear diff instead of the dana 35 would be ideal.
Depending on what you're going to do in the woods, think about a smaller lift (3.5" or so) 31 or 32" tires, and some under armor.
Good Luck with whatever you purchase, and get a second opinion before you buy whatever it is your gonna buy!
Merry Christmas!!!

Ive had a '90 Wagoneer, a '94 sport and 2 '98 SE's. I prefer the 97-99s because they have the best of everything, Hi Pinion Dana 30, Stronger Chrysler 8.25 rear end, less common exhaust manifold problems, newer so less miles, etc. Most of the SE models came with front, tcase and rear skids too. Happy shopping
